Early childhood care and education (ECCE) is more than preparation for primary school. It aims at the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.

I define a ‘bad childhood’ as knowing that your emotional, physical, and/or sexual safety was not guaranteed by your caretakers. Once a child feels unsafe like this, his priority must be to manage his parent’s feelings and behavior – instead of focusing on his own development.

Childhood trauma has been strongly linked to depression, substance use disorder, anxiety, eating disorders, and other mental health disorders that are present in adulthood.

How do you prevent ACEs?

These efforts include:Educating states and communities about effective social and economic supports that address financial hardship and other conditions that put families at risk for ACEs.Increasing access to programs that enhance parents’ and youths’ skills to handle stress, resolve conflicts, and reduce violence.
